Representing the A in STEAM at the Carnegie Science Center of Pittsburgh
Are you a Woman in Tech? The next generation is waiting for you to inspire them. To see that they belong in STEM too!
What is STEM? Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
What is STEAM? Science, Technology, Engineering, ART, and Mathematics
THE highlight of my year was being invited to the Carnegie Science Center for their You Rock Science 2022 event. This event features STEM professionals from underrepresented and historically excluded populations so that children have the opportunity to see that, YES, they can be a part of STEM too. It's a super fun day of discovery, play and demonstrations. For me, and my husband, it was a great reminder of why we love STEM and Art so very much.
I was thrilled to be asked to attend and represent the "Art" in STEAM. You may not have realized this but photography with cell phones has become so prevalent that now it is the only camera some children are exposed to. I loved introducing them to exposed film, a Holga and the inside of the simple camera, and a DSLR ("Wow, it's heavy!").
My form of photography is multiple exposure photography. By far their favorite offering at my table was learning hands-on what multiple exposure photography is by creating their own multiple exposure art. With images of flowers and paintings printed on overhead projector sheets, the children were able to see how two images came together to make one piece of art. They played with arranging the images and changing the distance between them. It was so much fun to see them experiment and learn. And you better bet, I had samples of all of the different ways that artists can print their work now, on metal, fine art paper, and wearable art.
Looking for a fun activity to do with the family over the winter break? Download the app “Snapseed” to your phone and discover multiple exposure photography yourself! Below you will find complete instructions. Snapseed works on any phone, I believe. I guarantee this will be a really fun activity for you and your family this winter.
So, dear fellow Woman in Tech. Look for opportunities to have fun with your skills and knowledge. Head on out there and inspire the next generation!
With much love,
Erica
